Slavie in the Community: Other Volunteer Activities
In addition to the specific organizations you may have seen in Slavie's Community Activity section, many members of the Slavie team participate individually in charitable, service and dedicated organizations.
Philip E. Logan, Slavie's President and Chief Executive Officer, is a member of the Army Alliance, Inc. The non-profit organization's objective is to maintain Aberdeen Proving Ground as a viable economic asset and resource to Northeast Maryland, by acting as a coordinating body for various clubs and groups.
Mr. Logan also serves as a founding board member of the Babe Ruth Birthplace Foundation, Inc., an organization which governs the Babe Ruth Museum and Sports Legends at Camden Station. The museum opened its door in May 2005. Mr. Logan serves on the museum's Development and Marketing Committees.
Charles Wagner, Jr., Slavie's Executive Vice-President and Chief Lending Officer, is a member of the Christian Business Men's Committee in Harford County. This group sponsors prayer breakfast meetings with Harford County organizations. Mr. Wagner also serves as an Elder for his congregation.
Gary Barnoff, Slavie's Vice-President of Branch Operations, serves as the President of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce. Formed on March 19, 1993, the Chamber promotes business partnerships within the City of Aberdeen and fosters business referrals among its members. With membership at a historic high, the Chamber conducts fundraising events to keep membership dues affordable and provide scholarships to Aberdeen High School graduating seniors. Mr. Barnoff is also a member of the Aberdeen Rotary Club. Founded in 1950, this organization fosters the ideal of service in its community as a basis of worthy enterprise. Mr. Barnoff, a Past-President of the Aberdeen Rotary Club, currently co-Chairs the Golf Tournament Committee, an event held annually in September. He is also a member of the Bull Roast Committee, an event held annually in March.
In 2006, these two major fundraising events combined raise over $67,000.00, of which $40,000.00 was donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County and $4,000.00 to a college scholarship fund for Aberdeeen High School students. The remaining funds were divided equally among various worthy local charitable organizations, such as Harford Habitat for Humanity, Harford Family House, the Arc of Northern Chesapeake, the LPGA First Tee program, the Aberdeen High School Band, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Harford Music Festival in support of the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. During the holiday season, the club's members "rang the bell" for the Salvation Army, raising over $3,000.00.
The Aberdeen Rotary Club's membership is comprised of prominent local business owners and organization leaders, who meets weekly on Mondays at the Aberdeen Holiday Inn. For more information, visit www.rotaryclubaberdeen.org.
Mr. Barnoff also serves as a Trustee of the Havre de Grace Presbyterian Church and as a Girls' Basketball Coach for the YMCA of Cecil County.
Sophie Wittelsberger, Slavie's Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer, is a board member of the Freedom Road Productions, an organization which promotes the cultural arts in Harford County. She is also a member of the Bel Air Independence Day Committee and the Maryland Bankers Community Reinvestment Group.
Mary Kay Fishpaugh, Slavie's Branch Manager for the Bel Air office, serves as a leader of her parish's youth group.
Slavie Federal Savings Bank received a Financial Education award at the 2004 and 2005 Maryland Bankers Association annual convention; the bank makes numerous charitable donations throughout the year and the following are a few of the organizations they sponsor:
